Film Review: Boys In The Trees

Boys In The Trees
Cast: Toby Wallace, Gulliver McGrath, Mitzi Ruhlmann, Justin Holborow
Director: Nicholas Verso
Release Date: Film Festival Release Only – Release Dates
Available On Amazon Prime Video and Itunes
Trailer:

Synopsis:
It’s Halloween 1997 – the last night of high school for Corey, Jango and their skater gang, The Gromits. Childhood is over and adult life beckons for Corey, but his past has some unfinished business.

When he encounters Jonah, a former childhood friend but now victimised by Jango’s cruel streak, Corey takes pity on him and agrees to walk him home for old time’s sake.
What starts off as a normal walk through empty suburban streets descends into something darker and more magical as they tell each other ghost stories, drawing upon their fears of the world around them.

As they walk through their memories and ghosts of the past, Corey is surprised to discover how much he still has in common with his abandoned friend. But just as their friendship appears rekindled, a tragic truth may mean he’s made the discovery all too late.

Review:
Once again, an independent horror film has delivered the goods.
2016 was a fantastic year for indie horror, with such films as Hush, The Invitation, Rob Zombies 13, Carnage Park, and Ghosts of Darkness, showing the big production companies such as Blumhouse how it should be done.
The film is another great effort from Australia. In the past, we have been treated to some brilliant films such as 2005’s Wolf Creek, 2009’s The Loved Ones, 2008’s Lake Mungo, and 2014’s The Babadook.
Quite simply the film is brilliant and actually had me in tears.
An aspect that I completely fell in love with, is that it completely reminded me of what life was like back in 1997. Dial-up modems and that awful noise they made, the hair cuts, music, cultural references… Its all there, and is a major trip down memory lane.
A big theme running through this film, is the outright bullying and emotional torture of one boy, and the scenes that feature in the film are brutal, and are hard to watch in places. Sadly, it shows just how far bullying can go when its not put a stop to, both by actions of the bullies, and by the victim.
maxresdefault
Character development in this coming of age feature is so well done. You’re introduced to the characters gently at first, and then find yourself immersed in their attitudes towards life and their mannerisms.
The detail that is put into showing how Jonah suffered at the hands of Jango and the skate gang, as said before, is difficult to watch, but is absolutely necessary for the development of Jonahs character and why he is, the way he is.
When Jonah and Corey come together, we learn a lot about Jonah’s character.
Boys-In-The-Trees-1
We learn that he is dark, mysterious and very cryptic. When they go on their journey together, Jonah isn’t always forthcoming with answers to Corey’s questions. He’s almost like the Ghost of Christmas Past, whereby he wants Corey to figure out what he did wrong, and how he can put it right.

In doing so, he puts Corey through many dark and dangerous scenarios, that both scare and terrify him, but in the end are explained and are all to prove different points.

Corey’s character development shows us how he goes from being an angry teen, with a major attitude problem, to then coming together with Jonah and being taken on this incredible, and at times delightfully dark and terrifying journey through the wrong doings in his life, from his childhood to modern day. Through this, he finds himself answering questions he had and questions that needed answers. The journey helps him change his whole view of the world, the way is acting towards people is wrong.

The Soundtrack:
The music that accompanies this film is nothing short of superb. I’m saying this because i’m of course in love with 90’s rock and grunge music. It took me right back to that time and space of being a teenager.
Although the music is plentiful, its used sensibly, and in scenes where it makes sense.
It wasn’t used in an over the top fashion and just put somewhere in the film for no other reason than its a song that’s popular… like how music is used in Suicide Squad for example…
The bands that feature in the film are The Presidents of the United States of America, BushDinosaur JrGary NumanRammsteinGarbage, and loads of other amazing bands…
Its honestly one of the best film soundtracks, I think I’ve ever heard… But of course I am biased, and not everyone will agree with, but i’m very impressed indeed.

Bullying:
https://nobullying.com/

Bullying
Bullying exists in many forms… In school, over the internet, and can even carry on as an adult in the work place, and in many other forms.
With bullying being a big theme in this film, and the terrible things people can be driven to do to themselves as a result… we here at The Scream Source, are completely against bullying, and want to offer any advice and support that we can, to victims of bullying.

6 Horror Films To Get Excited About (August-October 2017)

This year (2017) is crushing it with brilliant horror film releases already this year, and its not done with us yet. We thankfully haven’t had as much celebrity death in 2017, but we’ve had lots of awesome, juicy horror goodness to sink our teeth into.
Its such an exciting year to be a fan of horror films, and each month that goes by, it feels like things just keep getting better, and better, and the next 3 months are no exception.

Here are a hand picked selection of some of the upcoming films that we can’t wait see in theatres.

1. Annabelle Creation

Synopsis: Several years after the tragic death of their little daughter, a doll maker and his wife welcome a nun and several girls from an orphanage into their home.
Soon after, they become the target of the doll maker’s possessed creation.
Starring: Stephanie Sigman, Mirana Otto, Lulu Wilson
Release Date UK:
August 11th
Release Date US:
August 15th 2017
The Scream Source Says: Having already managed to catch this film, its a marked improvement on the first effort from 2014. Scary, imaginative and plenty happening to keep you occupied. A definite must see for all fans of The Conjuring universe.

2. IT

Synopsis: In Derry, Maine, seven friends come face-to-face with a shape shifter, who takes the form of an evil clown who targets children.
Starring: Bill Skarsgård, Jaeden Lieberher, Finn Wolfhard, Sopia Lillis, Nicholas Hamilton, Megan Charpentier, Owen Teague, Jack Dylan Grazer, Wyatt Oleff, Jeremy Ray Taylor
Release Date UK: September 8th, 2017
Release Date US:
September 8th, 2017
The Scream Source Says: Being a huge fan of the original film adaptation from 1990, and the record of remakes in the modern era of horror, you can understand my cynicism and outrage when it was announced that a remake was being put into production. That said, the trailer looks terrifying. Bill Skarsgård who plays the role of Pennywise, looks to be a brilliant piece of casting. He stars in the super successful Hemlock Grove, so is no stranger to the horror genre. Finn Wolfhard from the equally popular Stranger Things also features.

 3. Mother

Synopsis: A couple’s relationship is tested when uninvited guests arrive at their home, disrupting their tranquil existence.
Starring: Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem, Ed Harris, Michelle Pfeiffer
Release Date UK: September 15th, 2017
Release Date US:
September 15th, 2017
The Scream Source Says: This film looks a dark and disturbing as it does complex and intriguing. Its a welcome back to genre for Jennifer Lawrence and Michelle Pfeiffer, in what really could be a dark horse. In amongst heavyweights like Alien Covenant, IT, Leatherface, and Jigsaw, may be one of 2017’s unsung heroes.

4. Flatliners

Synopsis: Five medical students, obsessed by what lies beyond the confines of life, embark on a daring experiment. By stopping their hearts for short periods, each triggers a near-death experience, giving them a firsthand account of the afterlife.
Starring: Ellen Page, Nina Dobrev, James Norton, Diego Luna, Kiersey Clemons, Kiefer Sutherland, Beau Mirchoff, Steve Byers
Release Date UK: September 29th, 2017
Release Date US:
September 29th, 2017
The Scream Source Says: As with IT, i’m a fan of the original, and had a spit the coffee moment’ when I heard this was being remade. I’ve since read in numerous sources that this is supposed to be sequel. The cast is really good, with Ellen Page coming back to the fold for the first time since 2005’s Hard Candy, and Nina Dobrev who starred in the very brilliant The Final Girls also stars. They line up next to horror film royalty in Kiefer Sutherland, who returns to Flatliners after starring in the 1990 original.

5. Leatherface

Synopsis: A teenage Leatherface escapes from a mental hospital with three other inmates, kidnapping a young nurse and taking her on a road trip from hell while being pursued by an equally deranged lawman out for revenge.
Starring: Finn Jones, Stephen Dorff, Lili Taylor, James Bloor, Nicole Andrews, Vanessa Grasse, Sam Coleman
Release Date UK: August 25th 2017 (Horror Channel FrightFest)
Release Date US:
 September 21st 2017 (TV premiere)
The Scream Source Says: The mention of another film to do with The Texas Chainsaw Massacre completely baffled me. After the god awful reboots, I really hoped we would be left to live with the happy memories of Tobe Hooper’s and Gunnar Hansen’s 1974, blood soaked master piece. That was then though, and on the strength of the trailer for Leatherface, this looks like a film that the franchise both needs and deserves and really hope it delivers where it counts, when it counts.

6. Jigsaw

Synopsis: Bodies are turning up around the city, each having met a uniquely gruesome demise. As the investigation proceeds, evidence points to one man: John Kramer. But how can this be? The man known as Jigsaw has been dead for over a decade.
Starring:  Laura Vandervoort, Tobin Bell, Brittany Allen, Clé Bennett
Release Date UK: October 27th, 2017
Release Date US: October 27th, 2017
The Scream Source Says: Jigsaw will be the 8th instalment in the hugely successful Saw franchise, which began all the way back in 2004. The 7th, and what was billed as the final film went off the rails somewhat compared to the previous films and for some, was a film too far. Something that is loved about the films is of course the traps, which in the trailer look pretty decent so the hope is that the story will back them up, and be ambitious be feasible.

Sharknado 5: Global Swarming Review

Sharknado 5: Global Swarming
Cast:
Ian Ziering, Tara Reid, Cassandra Scerbo.
Release Date:
August 6th, 2017
Synopsis:
As shark-infested storms grow stronger and more complex, the world braces for sharknado’s on a global scale. This year, the mission gets personal for chainsaw-wielding leader Fin Shepard and his bionic wife, April, when their young son gets trapped in a sharknado and is transported all over the world.

On August 6th, the fifth and latest instalment of the immensely popular Sharknado franchise aired on the SyFy channel worldwide.
The latest effort, has been called ‘Global Swarming’, and has been marketed with the tag line ‘Make America Bait Again’, which I have say, that although its simple, its effective and its brilliant.

The film itself tickles, delights, and horrifies you in all the right places.
landscape-1501598136-nup-177325-0023Ian Ziering, Tara Reid return as Fin and April in what really is an absolute creature feature horror/fun fest. At the end of Sharknado 4: The Fourth Awakens, we saw April get a hefty upgrade from her father (Gary Busey), and now has all kinds of super powers such as a hand that can change into numerous damage dealing weapons, and amongst other awesome things, can now fly.
Fin is his usual chainsaw wielding, shark slaughtering, bad ass self, and continues to do what he does best… Being the go to guy for tackling Sharknado’s.

cassie scerbo mainNova, played by Cassandra Scerbo, who featured in the 1st and 3rd films returns after her battles in Paris, and has formed a sisterhood to fight back against the sharks, in an attempt to save the world. She has taken on a sort of Indiana Jones roll in this film, running around various locations looking for artefacts in an effort to better understand how Sharknado’s have tormented humans throughout history, and to find a way to stop them.

The Plot: Fin and Nova disturbing an artefact which is an offering to the Shark god, and start a chain of events which goes global, and types of Sharknado’s that have never been seen before, and wont be solved by throwing bombs into the eye of the storm. Little Gil (Fin and April’s Son), gets sucked up into a Sharknado, which at its core, has a portal that transports the Sharknado to a different location in the world.
The artefact that Fin and April are in possession of, allows  to summon the Sharknado with the portal that contains their son. Diving head first into the storms in an effort to find Gil, the portal teleport’s them around the world, from the UK, to Australia, Brazil, Bulgaria, Egypt, Japan, and Italy, destroying iconic and historical monuments, and leaving a trail of destruction in their wake.

The Cameo’s:
Since Sharknado 2: The Second One, something we have all looked forward to is the list of celebrity cameo’s, and the latest instalment, without a shadow of a doubt has the best yet.
Playing themselves, were:

  • Al Roker, Kathie Lee Gifford, Hoda Kotb and Jeff Rosen from the Today news team in the U.S.

Sharknado 5: Global Swarming - Season 2017

What a lot of people don’t get with these films, or seem to completely forget, is that this does not exist in any kind of reality.
It’s not meant to be taken seriously.
Its a franchise where the phrases ‘Too Much’, and ‘What the hell’ mean absolutely nothing. They’re films that you can just watch and enjoy.
If you havent checked it out already, be sure that you do…and have a laugh at how outlandish it is, and then squirm at the many, many people being squashed and eaten by many, many sharks, as Fin and his team of ultimate bad asses take on the sharknado’s.

Triple 6 Horror Film Festival

On May 27th and 28th 2017, Manchester will be invaded by horror hounds up and down the nation, for the celebration of new, Independent horror films on the big screen.

The Triple Six Horror Film Festival is the brainchild of Andy Deen, owner of UK Horror Scene, and Chris Barnes, owner of The Slaughtered Bird.

It was decided by the pair, that Northern England should have the kind of horror film festival that it both needs, and deserves.
After months of hard work and planning, AMC Cinema in Manchester has become the home for the inaugural Triple 6 Horror Film Festival.

Over the 2 days, Triple 6 will have a screen all to itself, with the festival will showing 9 feature films, and 9 short films, with the aim to highlight and celebrate, the best talent across the horror genre.
On top of that we will have special guests, Q&As, an after-festival party and much more.

There will be lots of activity throughout the day. To help plan your day, here is the schedule of the films and their show times:

For all the info on both the short and feature films, including synopsis and run times, check them out right HERE

Special Guest
Untitled-1.jpg

The special guest for the festival will be groundbreaking director Richard Stanley,
He will be with Triple 6 fans for the entire weekend, and will be showing his debut feature, called Hardware on 35mm.
The showing of the film will be followed by a full Q&A with Richard.

Hardware is a totally unique, visually stunning feature that needs to be seen on the big screen. Aesthetically compared to Gilliam & Jodorowsky and with a real 1990’s man vs machine mentality that summed up the age when technology was becoming an essential part of life not a luxury, along with a stunning industrial score, Hardware is a mix of horror, sci-fi and much more. Rarely seen on the big screen, especially in 35mm, this will be an amazing one-off experience!

There are still weekend tickets available. Check the link for the tickets at the top of the article.

We here at The Scream Source, UK Horror Scene, The Slaughterbird, AMC Cinema, and the amazing sponsors of the event hope to see you all there!

Film Review: Alien Covenant (2017)

Film: Alien Covenant
Starring: Michael Fassbender; Katherine Waterston; Billy Crudup; Danny McBride; Demián Bichir; Carmen Ejogo; Jussie Smollett; Callie Hernandez; Amy Seimetz

Introduction:
Finally, the showpiece everyone has been talking about has arrived.
The most anticipated film of the year for all fans of the Alien franchise, is now in cinemas nationwide.
I was lucky enough to get to an advanced screening, to see what all the fuss was about, and I wasnt disappointed.

Plot:
Ten years after the events of Prometheus, the vessel ‘Covenant’ is on its way to a new world on a colonising mission.
Some Seven years from their destination, the crew are woken from hyper-sleep after the vessel sustains considerable damage.
The crew receive a transmission of unknown origin, and under company orders, must go and investigate it at the source.
It is while surveying the transmission on this new world, that the crew run into a difficulties and find in a battle to stay alive and somehow, get back to the Covenant

Is This Film Another Promethues?:
The short answer? NO…, it most certainly is not.
Prometheus-teaser-poster
Prometheus, although divisive, in my opinion is a fantastic film. As i’m sure you all know, this film is the start of a series of prequels to the original Alien film. Yes, I know we don’t get to see an Alien until the end, and yes, its not the traditional Alien that we’re all used to seeing and having nightmares about, but appreciation needs to be given to the fact that these films are going to tell a story from its absolute beginning, up to its end.
The story may not be moving along quick enough for some peoples liking, and you’re entitled to your opinion, but I cant help thinking, that if the story jumped forward at a rate of knots, it would have people being faced with more questions than answer.

How Does It Carry On From Prometheus:
I don’t really want to give too much of the film away with any big reveals, so i’ll try to be as reserved, but as informative as possible.
The Covenant story keeps two of the key characters from Prometheus, and its no secret that two in question are David, and Elizabeth Shaw, meaning unquestionably, that these two will play a rather pivotal role in the film.
NElvP6DrMQHWpr_2_bThe crew follow a rogue transmission to, at this time, an un-surveyed world, and a new world of sheer hell unfolds around them.

The come across a dishevelled David, who has been on this planet for 10 years by himself, with millions of canisters of black goo, allowing him to investigate its properties and power of mutation when applied to different species, in his attempts to make the ‘perfect organism’… But all this time, has been deprived of one key ingredient, that would allow him to complete his ‘experiments’.

The New Characters:
The introduction of the new characters is very refreshing, and really bring the new story to life.
I liked the return to the strong, ass kicking female lead, which was the character Daniels that was portrayed by Katherine Waterston.
She seemed so in her element and at ease with the role she was in. You can really feel the fear and emotion coming through the screen and you form a bond and an attachment to her character.
Screenshot 2017-04-27 at 20.56.18 - EditedDanny McBride also did a fantastic job as Tenessee, the no nonsense ship pilot. Again, you form a bond with this character and the raw, unbridled emotion.

If I could say anything negative about the new characters, it would be that with the exception of the two above mentioned, you don’t really see too much of the others, who are pretty much Alien fodder. It is these characters that lack development and any real kind of proper involvement, other than to be there like lambs to the slaughter.

Michael Fassbender:
Fassbender absolutely steals the show.
Appearing in the film as both David, and new ship android Walter, he is quite simply fantastic.
empire-cap-09 - Edited
He is in whole other element, elevating the film, and playing the part of the good guy, and the bad guy with such style and finesse. At times, David is evil incarnate, taking in the unsuspecting crew before putting them through outright misery.
In the above picture above, we see David and a young Peter Weyland in conversation and is thirsty for knowledge about creation and where he came from, and where humans came from and beyond that.
Just as he was created by man, he wants to be the next to create life, and will do it any cost.
In Davids own words, “Big things have small beginnings”.
prometheus_screencap98 - Edited
Portraying the parts of androids, unlike his colleagues, needed to be completely emotionless in his performance. But at the same time, the character development is such, that again, you do form a bond.
His portrayal of Walter is the polar opposite of David.
what-walter-doing-new-alien-covenant-movie-stills-released-31
Where as David was developed with the ability to express emotion and be free thinking, albeit, in a very dark way, Walter does not possess these abilities, and is purely there to serve and protect the crew, much like Bishop in James Cameron’s ‘Aliens’.

The  Aliens:
MV5BNjgyNjdiOTUtYzk2NC00Yjk5LWI2NTktYmE2NjhlYTk3NGRhL2ltYWdlL2ltYWdlXkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyMzMyODMwMTI@._V1_SY1000_CR0,0,674,1000_AL_
The Bitch Is Back!!!
Hail the return of the Xenomorph,
or as most know it, a chest-burster.
As we all know, these evil buggers come from a face hugger, implanting an embryo into the throat of some poor soul, and then some time later, the creature will burst through the ribs and chest of the victim, and then unleash and unholy amount of pain and misery, to anyone that comes before them.

And then there is the new Neomorph, or as is more terrifyingly known, the back-burster.

So lets run run through how these bad boys come to exist.
The first of the above pictures shows an airborne contaminant that enters the body through an orifice of its choosing.
Soon after, the embryo implanted from the spore will grow, and its dorsal spikes will break through your spine, and hatch. In the two pictures that follow, you can get a good look at the teeth, and then, the creature is sitting down, having some lunch.
Like the Xenomorphs, these creatures are ultra aggressive, ultra hostile, and their hatching sequence, as described above, is done in the film, in graphic detail.
Something that is available that’s pretty cool, is the Alien Covenant: In Utero.

It lets you be part of the hatching sequence, but as the Alien. Its something very unique, that every Alien fan should experience.

Ouija: Origin of Evil Review

Introduction

I saw trailers of this film, and was extremely intrigued by it.
It follows the familiar story we’ve seen in nearly every film featuring a Ouija board.
A girl uses a Ouija board, gets possessed by a demon, and causes chaos, while her family seek the help of a priest to save the poor girl.
But that being said, the writers and  director have taken that premise, and completely turned it on its head. mv5bmji4odc0mtcymv5bml5banbnxkftztgwmtg5njczmdi-_v1_sx1777_cr001777878_al_

This film features, possibly the scariest little girl-devil, she-beast, I’ve ever seen in a horror film.

This film will take you by surprise, and boasts some particularly dark and frightening imagery.

Synopsis

Set in 1965 in Los Angeles, the film stars Elizabeth Reaser (Twilight) as Alice, the widowed mother of two daughters Lina and Doris, and runs a fake seance scam, as a business from her families home.
She is looking to add something new to bolster her business, and so, a Ouija board is brought into the property.
They unwittingly invite pure evil into their home.
When the youngest daughter is overtaken by a merciless spirit, the family confronts unthinkable fears, to save her and send her possessor back to the other side.

I had to include this. It was too good to leave out”

Our Thoughts

I’ll say this again. This is not your typical possession film.
When Doris, the youngest of two daughters, uses the Ouija board and believes shes made contact with her deceased father, she couldn’t be further from the truth.
From there on in, the genie is out of the bottle.
The evil entity is released from the board, and into the house, and begins to play tricks on family and friends, that quickly escalate and become serious. They’ll send chills down your spine.

The film is well paced. It’s not a slow burner. You can get right into the film from the beginning. It gets you interested straight away and it keeps ticking over nice. That is helped by the opening few scenes, which will certainly make you jump. And i’m happy to report, its not because of a forced jump scare! In fact, this film is pretty limited on the forced jump scare front, which was very pleasing.

The scene, shown in short as a GIF to the right, is the part of the film where Doris actually becomes possessed, and way that it is done is just fantastic.
Its original, interesting, and most of all frightening.

After the possession, as you would imagine, a whole host of crazy, weird and awful things take place. The slingshot scene from the trailer is one you’ll no doubt remember.
The two daughters are at a catholic school, and it is Lina, the older of the two sisters, who brings it to the priests attention that something is very wrong with Doris.

Trust in me when I say, that the ending to this film, is a pretty twisted one, with death, carnage and blood shed being plentiful. You will not be disappointed.

Ouija: Origin of Evil, really is one of the better films to come out of one of the big production houses this year. Its good to see, that they have actually gone for making a film, that isn’t a remake or a reboot.

If this particular horror sub-genre is your cup of tea, then you are really going to want to see this one.
