On May 27th and 28th 2017, Manchester will be invaded by horror hounds up and down the nation, for the celebration of new, Independent horror films on the big screen.

Special Guest
Untitled-1.jpg

The special guest for the festival will be groundbreaking director Richard Stanley,
He will be with Triple 6 fans for the entire weekend, and will be showing his debut feature, called Hardware on 35mm.
The showing of the film will be followed by a full Q&A with Richard.

Hardware is a totally unique, visually stunning feature that needs to be seen on the big screen. Aesthetically compared to Gilliam & Jodorowsky and with a real 1990’s man vs machine mentality that summed up the age when technology was becoming an essential part of life not a luxury, along with a stunning industrial score, Hardware is a mix of horror, sci-fi and much more. Rarely seen on the big screen, especially in 35mm, this will be an amazing one-off experience!

There are still weekend tickets available. Check the link for the tickets at the top of the article.

We here at The Scream Source, UK Horror Scene, The Slaughterbird, AMC Cinema, and the amazing sponsors of the event hope to see you all there!

Comic Review: Freddy vs Jason vs Ash – The Nightmare Warriors

***WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD***

Introduction:
The Nightmare Warriors is the 2nd ‘Freddy vs Jason vs Ash’ mini series from Wildstorm comics. It carries on from where the original mini series leaves off.

In the showdown at the end of what we will call “Season One”, the scene is set for the show down at Camp Crystal Lake, where the three titans are in the midst of a fight to the death.
MNAG2411
Ash scrambles for the Necronimcon, sends Freddy through a portal into the Deadite dimension, and then in classic fashion, drowns Jason in the lake, along with the Necronomicon.
With Freddy and Jason defeated, the evil book now lies at the bottom of the frozen lake, and out of sight of anybody that could pick it up and read from it

Or is it…?

Plot:
In the midst of a new top secret government project involving the Necronomicon Exmortis, there are two psychiatrists that are trying to locate and bring together survivors of past encounters of with Freddy and Jason, to form a group called The Nightmare Warriors, and with the help of a certain ‘Chosen One’, make a march on Washington, to fight pure evil, and defeat it once and for all.

Review:
Where do begin with this mini series… Quite simply put, its very good, and is a great way to follow on from the first series.
HYLX9035
As soon as Jason comes back into the mix, literally, all hell breaks loose and the carnage at the end of the first comic continues.
As you’d expect from a comic with these three characters, its pretty non stop action throughout.
With this comic book having the title ‘Nightmare Warriors’, this is of course, a group of people who have fought Freddy or Jason and survived.
Dr Neil Gordon (Elm Street 3) returns in the role of Psychiatrist, and is still trying to figure out a way to stop Krueger for good. Also from the Elm Street series, the protagonist Alice who features in Elm Street 4 & 5 and her son Jacob are featured.
As a special treat, and with the power of the Necronomicon, some of those who have perished throughout the Elm Street series get resurrected to come and help finish the job. CUOF2605
Joining the Warriors, is Tommy Jarvis who features in Friday the 13th parts 4,5 &6, and is joined by his franchise counterpart Tina, from Friday the 13th Part 7. They are of course joined by the chosen one… Ash Williams from Evil Dead.
The team are led by Maggie Burroughs, who is the Psychiatrist leading the Warriors. To all Elm Street fans, if Maggie’s name sounds familiar, it should do.
Something I enjoyed in particular is that every character gets there moment in the sun. There isn’t anyone who is there for fodder… But in saying that, this comic does have a bit of ‘The Walking Dead’ complex, in that even the characters can die.
The essence of the characters is captured so well.
The script written for Ash is brilliant. I found myself reading his lines with Bruce Campbell’s voice in my head at every turn.
The same can be said with Freddy Krueger. Its hard to compare his character to any one of the Elm Street films as there is a piece of him from each one.
Jason, as expected… he’s a man of few words, but rest assured he does a hell of a lot of killing. Something else to mention about Jason, is that in this comic, he is sporting a new, rather fetching get up which I found… Shall we say… at first I found ‘interesting’, but really grew on me as the series went on.

I do need to say as well, that the art work in this series, has definitely improved. The first series has a brilliant story, though in the earlier comics, the art work lacked consistency. Whether that’s down to different artists working on the project is unknown, but in the ‘Nightmare Warriors’ series, there are vast improvements. The little intricacies of the characters are captured brilliantly. The first series and ‘The Nightmare warriors are both well worth a look.

Each of these characters also has their own series of comics that are like these, independent from the films, and are like the Freddy vs Jason vs Ash series… an incredibly good read.

Ouija: Origin of Evil Review

Introduction

I saw trailers of this film, and was extremely intrigued by it.
It follows the familiar story we’ve seen in nearly every film featuring a Ouija board.
A girl uses a Ouija board, gets possessed by a demon, and causes chaos, while her family seek the help of a priest to save the poor girl.
But that being said, the writers and  director have taken that premise, and completely turned it on its head. mv5bmji4odc0mtcymv5bml5banbnxkftztgwmtg5njczmdi-_v1_sx1777_cr001777878_al_

This film features, possibly the scariest little girl-devil, she-beast, I’ve ever seen in a horror film.

mv5bmtuyndcymtqznv5bml5banbnxkftztgwntg5njczmdi-_v1_sx1777_cr001777878_al_

This film will take you by surprise, and boasts some particularly dark and frightening imagery.

Trailer

Synopsis

Set in 1965 in Los Angeles, the film stars Elizabeth Reaser (Twilight) as Alice, the widowed mother of two daughters Lina and Doris, and runs a fake seance scam, as a business from her families home.
She is looking to add something new to bolster her business, and so, a Ouija board is brought into the property.
They unwittingly invite pure evil into their home.
When the youngest daughter is overtaken by a merciless spirit, the family confronts unthinkable fears, to save her and send her possessor back to the other side.

I had to include this. It was too good to leave out”

Our Thoughts

I’ll say this again. This is not your typical possession film.
When Doris, the youngest of two daughters, uses the Ouija board and believes shes made contact with her deceased father, she couldn’t be further from the truth.
From there on in, the genie is out of the bottle.
The evil entity is released from the board, and into the house, and begins to play tricks on family and friends, that quickly escalate and become serious. They’ll send chills down your spine.

The film is well paced. It’s not a slow burner. You can get right into the film from the beginning. It gets you interested straight away and it keeps ticking over nice. That is helped by the opening few scenes, which will certainly make you jump. And i’m happy to report, its not because of a forced jump scare! In fact, this film is pretty limited on the forced jump scare front, which was very pleasing.
tumblr_odiki0qpuj1skd4ego1_500
The scene, shown in short as a GIF to the right, is the part of the film where Doris actually becomes possessed, and way that it is done is just fantastic.
Its original, interesting, and most of all frightening.

After the possession, as you would imagine, a whole host of crazy, weird and awful things take place. The slingshot scene from the trailer is one you’ll no doubt remember.
The two daughters are at a catholic school, and it is Lina, the older of the two sisters, who brings it to the priests attention that something is very wrong with Doris.

Trust in me when I say, that the ending to this film, is a pretty twisted one, with death, carnage and blood shed being plentiful. You will not be disappointed.

Ouija: Origin of Evil, really is one of the better films to come out of one of the big production houses this year. Its good to see, that they have actually gone for making a film, that isn’t a remake or a reboot.

If this particular horror sub-genre is your cup of tea, then you are really going to want to see this one.

The Best Of Freddy Krueger

It’s no secret, that my favourite horror franchise, is Nightmare On Elm Street.
The man in the dirty red and green sweater, is the villain that keeps on tickin…
freddy-krueger-750x1334
Throughout the Elm Street films, Freddy has had so many brilliant moments… classic moments… and dare I say it… Epic moments (I hate that word).
Whether it be something he’s said, or a really inventive, imaginative kill… which of these are his best?
I have taken on the mammoth task, of going through video, after video of Freddy’s banter, and the slaughter of the teenagers on Elm Street… and picked my favourite Freddy moments.

1. Nightmare On Elm Street 5 : Dream Child
…Freddy’s Re-Birth…

…”It’s A Boy”…

2. Nightmare On Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors
…Jennifer’s Big Break In TV…

“…Cut The Prime Time Bitch…”

3. Nightmare On Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors…
…A Puppet Called Philip…

Freddy Krueger: The Puppet Master

4. Wes Craven’s New Nightmare
…Julie’s Death…

…”Ever Played Skin The Cat?”…

7qn5zpzotenprns8e6d1ui5ahiiFun Fact:
The glove worn in this film, was the only glove to feature a 5 blades, instead of the normal 4, with the extra blade being on the thumb. ‘Robert Englund’, the actor who plays the role of Freddy Krueger, hated the re-designed glove, and found it very ‘clunky’ and difficult to use and operate.

5. Nightmare On Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge
…Jesse’s Transformation…

…Bye Bye Grady…

6. Nightmare On Elm Street
…Tina’s Death…

…”This Is God”…

7. Nightmare On Elm Street 4: …Dream Master
…Roach Motel…

…”You Can Check In, But You Can’t Check Out”…

8. Nightmare On Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors
…Wizard Master Death…

…”Its Back In The Saddle Again”…

9. Nightmare On Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge
…”You’ve Got The Body”…

…”And I’ve Got The Brain”…

10. Nightmare On Elm Street (2010)
…Jesse’s Death…

…”We’ve Still Got 6 More Minutes To Play”…

Honorable Mention
…Nightmare On Elm Street (2010)…
…Alternate Ending…

This gets an honorable mention, because this is a gem, that should have been used in the original, but for some odd reason was left out. The reboot, for all its misgivings, would have, in my opinion, been elevated with this ending. The whole “Welcome To My World” speech in the theatrical ending, just feels like such a cop out, and a total let down. I hope you enjoy the alternate ending as much as me.

Death House: Are You Ready?

THE DAY HAS FINALLY ARRIVED!!!

Thats right folks, the trailer for the highly anticipated ‘Death House’ has landed.

Amazing right?

deathhouse_2The trailer delivers on so many levels. Harrison Smith, and his production team, have been very clever, and put some real thought and effort, into putting this trailer together. It lays everything out perfectly. I felt an excitement that I hadn’t felt for a long time.
Something that really got me, was that, although it delivers everything you would want from a trailer, it doesn’t give up the secrets of the film.

Of7Vg22

Cortney Palm (Agent Toria Boon), & Cody Longo (Agent Jae Novak)

The synopsis of the film, sees Agents Boon and Novak, getting an exclusive tour of the ‘Death House’ facility. A prison that houses the most dangerous criminals in the world. A power breakdown, sets the inmates free, and sends the two agents into a fight for survival, as they navigate their way to the depths of the prison, where a supernatural evil may be their only chance of survival.

After seeing the trailer, it has left me with questions. Left me wanting to know, the background of the FBI graduates, the backgrounds of doctors, the nazi style experiments, on human subjects, the backgrounds of the inmates. Also, what will be the agenda of the inmates, now that they’re free of their restraints? How are the agents going to escape? What, are the 5 evils?
It’s left me craving more, and that’s what a proper trailer should do. It reminds of trailers of a bygone era.

At the start of the Q&A session at the ‘Days Of The Dead’
the panel took no prisoners, and gave the world of horror, what I think, is a wake up call.

A point that was made clear, was that there is no CGI in this film, except for the editing and putting the filmed scenes together. Everything else, is all practical effects. The set, the blood, guts, gore, the lot, all practical.

Death-House-Poster

That is making a statement. It proves that you don’t need a film full of CGI, and added in effects. With this, everything is being stripped back, and going right back to the blood roots of what makes a horror film, a horror film, and it’s so refreshing.CoVaIdcXgAAlLrx

Harrison and Sid Haig also spoke about the horror genre in general and the state of things at the moment. Some of the subjects discussed were, What the hell is PG-13 horror? Why was Massacre left out of the recent Texas Chainsaw Remake?
I completely agree with Harrison Smith, in that we, as fans, supporters, even lovers of the horror genre, should demand more from the films we are getting. I’m so tired of films that feature the word Paranormal. Where is the next ‘Nightmare On Elm Street’? or ‘Hellraiser’? And I dont just mean remaking the classics.
I truly believe, that this film and any subsequent sequels, will be the start of bringing horror back, and starting a revolution in the horror genre.
I will continue to report any Death House news as it comes available. Please check out the Twitter and Facebook pages for the film.

American Horror Story: Season 6 Teasers – Part 1-10

September 14th, on FOX, will see the return, of American Horror Story, for it’s 6th season. Every fan of the show, is dying to know what the theme of this season will be.
The AHS creators, and the big brass at the FOX network, want to keep season 6 a total secret, until the season premier.
Teaser trailers, have been released over the days and weeks leading up to the big night, but only 1 of the teasers is the real one. Below are the teaser trailers, Parts 1 to 10.
So here is my thoughts on what I like, love, think… meh, or don’t like, hate

1. Lullaby

This teaser trailer immediately makes me think of the baby in season one’s ‘Murder House’. If the rumour is true, that all the seasons will link up in season 6, could this be the link that brings it all together?
Verdict: Intriguing

2. What’s Cooking

I don’t know about you, but this 2nd teaser trailer, called ‘Whats Cooking’, makes me think of ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’. That would be interesting, and very dark avenue to go down. LeatherFace done AHS Style? Imagine the possibilities!!!
Verdict: Like

3. Sunset Stroll

The 3rd entry, titled Sunset Stroll, really had me stumped! Family going for a walk… Looks like rough terrain. The desert maybe? Nuclear waste, or a radioactive spill has made them into crazy cannibals? Zombies perhaps? The whole zombie thing, would be a brave move, with the likes of ‘The Walking Dead’ to compete with.
Verdict: No Thanks

4. Milli Crossing

GaGa much? This  looks like ‘The Countess’ from season 5’s ‘Hotel’. We already saw a major link to season 1, when a pregnant countess, went to the murder house, to get an abortion, and kept baby, to the dismay of James Patrick March. So if chosen, could this be an indication, that will be expanded on and link the seasons together?
Verdict: Very Interesting

5. Post-Op

The surgeon from hell! This has traits of season 2’s ‘Asylum’. It has an incredibly dark, and sinister feeling to it. Something in a hospital, with a ‘Doctor Death’ type figure, could be pretty awesome!
Verdict: Interesting

6. Descent

The People Under The Stairs!!! EEK!!! If you’ve seen the film, you’ll know what I mean. The basement is dark and full of mystery… whats evil lurks down there? If a season of AHS was done along the lines of the ‘People Under The Stairs’ film, that would be some dark, evil television indeed.
Verdict: Amazing

7. The Mist

I’m in love this teaser trailer. There’s nothing complicated about it. There’s no metaphor, there is no hidden meaning. What creatures are lurk in the mist? You know somethings coming out of it, but you don’t know what it is. Its what you don’t see that is the most terrifying, and that’s a really clever way way of going about things.
If ‘The Mist’ was to be the theme of season 6, I would be a very happy man.  This has the potential to be incredible.
Verdict: In Love

8. Hang Tight

Chains and meat hooks. Perhaps a torture room that James Patrick March himself would revel in. Though I have to say, an episode with a torture room would be awesome, but I don’t see it being a theme for a whole season of AHS.
Verdict: Rubbish

9. The Shadow

‘The Shadow’ is another teaser trailer, that I think has real potential to be turned into a full season. This one seems to me, to have the feeling of the old silent films, like Nosferatu for example. There is lots of different angles that can be explored here, and would give the writers, almost a whole new universe to work in, and be creative. And again, this is another example of, its what you don’t see that, that gives you the fear. For something to give you real fear and terror, sometimes, the image or the story doesn’t have to shown and explained. Its the story, or the picture that is created in your mind, that can really bring the horror to life. I think this could be used in that way.
Verdict: In Love

10. Wind Chimes

This is a bit of a dud really. An evil dentist?  Maybe! This is another one that wouldn’t have a season based around it. The teaser definitely has shock value. We’ve all had the dream about our teeth being pulled out.
Verdict: Rubbish
